So there are my sketchbooks. Some are better than others, but I'm getting better with each one.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! An update on the art scholarship! A couple of weeks ago I was called in for an interview with the Calaveras Arts Council. They asked me a bunch of questions and I showed them some of my artwork. One of the council members said my "Sky High" watercolor was one of her favorites in the show. There were four of us interviewing; a girl in my class who is amazing with acrylic and pastel, a girl in my class last year who has mastered colored pencil, and my friend who is a talented "monologuer" (is that a word?). This last Tuesday letters were handed out to Seniors who won a scholarship. The letters invite the winners to an awards ceremony on May 30th to find out what scholarship they won. I received a letter!!! So on May 30th I find out if I won the art scholarship, along with other local scholarships I applied for!!!

Fourth Quarter Sketchbook

"Best Friends" Circus Sketchbook Assignment
Here is my "Circus" themed drawing for my sketchbook. For the past four years my art teacher, Mrs. Smith, has been fighting for sketchbook participation. My Freshman year she gave us a topic each week: something from our pocket, our Dad's shoe, a crumpled paper, ext. Sophomore year we got to choose what to draw each week. Last year she handed out photos every other week, trying to give more time for us to draw. This year she did something completely different. We had the entire quarter to complete 3 drawings from supplied photos, and 10 extra add ins of our choice. After three quarters, and many failed sketchbooks, we had a class lecture/discussion on why sketchbooks are important. Mrs. Smith changed our sketchbook process back to the way of Freshman year. We are given two topics to choose from each week. Over spring break my class had to draw something "cold" or "circus" related. I chose circus.

I never really put much care into sketchbooks, always waiting for the last day to draw my picture. Even with the quarter assignment I would draw all three sketches Sunday night, and grab 10 doodles/ sketches from my backpack during school before 6th period art. I procrastinate a lot.

This quarter I will put more effort into my sketches. I will probably still draw them on Sunday, but mostly because it is a good Sunday activity.

Art Spirit, the Calaveras County Arts Council's 15th Annual High School Art Exhibit

This year 147 students from three high schools, Calaveras, Bret Harte, and Mountain Oaks, entered 210 works in 10 categories. Each student could enter up to two artworks total in any of the categories. I chose two of my best watercolors to enter. I also put them up to sell.

On March 10th the show opened, and winners were recognized. It turns out I won both 1st and 2nd in watercolor, AND, I sold both pieces -- College Money!

"Sky High" 1st Place Watercolor Painting

"Colors of the Wind" 2nd Place Watercolor Painting

I also applied for an art scholarship from the Arts Council. Sometime in April or May I should hear back to see if I won the scholarship.

Anyways, I am having fun painting. Watercolors are definitely my favorite, but I am experimenting with Acrylic a little in class. I hope to develop my talent more in college, trying out illustration at BYUI and eventually animation at BYU. One day I will be back in California working in Emeryville as part of the Pixar team. That would be awesome.
